MIAMI, FL – October 21, 2010 — October is Hispanic Heritage Month and November is American Diabetes Month®. Nearly 24 million children and adults in the United States live with diabetes and an additional 57 million Americans are at risk for developing it. The disease is the 5th leading cause of death among Hispanics and African-Americans. As part of Humana’s efforts to promote health and wellness within the South Florida and Hispanic business communities, Humana is partnering with the South Florida Hispanic Chamber of Commerce to host former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Richard Carmona at the 16th Annual Sunshine Awards.

The Awards seek to recognize and celebrate the contributions and achievements of South Florida’s entrepreneurs, executives and small business owners for their work, leadership and community involvement and serve as the perfect backdrop to help create awareness in the Hispanic business community about diabetes.

Who: Dr. Richard Carmona, former U.S. Surgeon General and our nation’s top doctor from 2002-2006. Dr. Carmona has overcome great adversity growing up in an impoverished Hispanic family where he experienced health disparities firsthand; he will address community leaders on the importance of preventative health, the seriousness of diabetes among Hispanics and share tips for a more informed and healthy lifestyle. Additionally, the American Diabetes Association and Mercy Hospital will be on hand at the event to hand out information on Diabetes and provide free glucose screenings.
